The Fox in the Attic

My name is Michelle, and I live in a tall house by the seaside with my husband, my daughter Penelope, and our ginger cat Floyd. In 2010, on a complete whim, I bought a sewing machine, rediscovered my passion for embroidery, and made my first soft animal toy (a bunny). By 2011 I  begun selling my creations on Etsy, under the name The Fox In The Attic.

A world of possibilities swiftly opened itself up to me, and my ever-growing range of hand-made items began to include cats, foxes, dogs, pin-cushions, napkins, owls and even clouds! I haven't looked back since.

I take inspiration from a huge range of people, places and things: from travel (Sicily, Paris, Amsterdam, Cornwall) to Art (Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, Beatrix Potter) to world history (medieval tapestries/illustrated manuscripts), and the Arts & Crafts movements spear-headed by William Morris.

My more esoteric tastes include obscure Victorian botanical illustrations, old postcards, visiting museums and stately homes, antique jewellery (often found in flea-markets around the world) - and I'm also a total sucker for period-films (anything by Jane Austen and I'm there!).
