So, I've been thinking about blogging, and I'm not entirely sure that it’s something I can do. Here is why: I have a bit of a fear of writing in English. My native tongue is Afrikaans. The fact that I am a perfectionist doesn't help either. For me, it has to be perfect. Nothing less will do. It will be difficult to let that go. I am also worried that I just don’t have enough to say, or that the things I blog about might not be of any actual interest to people. Perhaps all those are common enough concerns for most bloggers when they start out, but that doesn't necessarily make it any easier.
The reason I want to start blogging is because I recently realised that I have a need for greater connection with the community around me. Since we (me, my husband & our cat) moved down to St Leonards on Sea from London, and I gave birth to our daughter Penelope, I have felt quite isolated and disconnected. I often say that I just need to get over it, and that things could be worse, but the truth is that it is effecting not only my creativity/work, but also me as a person. I like being on my own, and spending time in my own company, but I realise that I also need people and interaction too.
Last year was a bit of a sad year for me, and this year has not gotten off to a great start. Winter is not helping things. Perhaps I’ve just forgotten that these winter months can feel long, dark and never-ending. January is often a slow month, and I’m not very good with doing nothing. I need to be busy. Penelope obviously keeps me busy, but all the mothers out there will understand how important it is to keep your own identity, dreams and goals alive. I am not just a mother.
So, to help me with my new resolve, I’ve made a little list of things I want to blog about. Family life, kids, food, a little bit about my work, photography, craft, interiors and motherhood.
And now then, for those who've asked, and as a sort of introduction, a little bit about me so far.
My name is Michelle Kreussel, I’m married to Wojtek (a musician/writer), and I'm mother to Penelope, who is 19 months old. I was born in South Africa and grew up in a small town called Parys, in the Freestate, next to the Vaal River. I have always loved drawing, painting and being creative. My parents encouraged my brother and I to always do what we love. After finishing school I didn't know what to do with my life, so my parents bought me a ticket to the UK to travel, work and have fun. I loved London immediately, and when I left I knew that I’d be back. I studied Graphic Design in Pretoria, in South Africa. After a few years of back and forth between SA and the UK, and some travelling, I came back to London in 2008. One day I asked Wojtek (who I first met in 2005) to meet me for a coffee, and the rest is history as they say. I love coffee, crisps and anything salty. I love cooking, but since having Penelope, preparing food for us all has sort of become Wojtek’s department. But I am planning on getting back into cooking, especially for blogging purposes now. I am obsessed with period dramas, Game of Thrones, F1 and Nordic Noir.
So, it looks like I’ve finally written my first proper blog post! My next one will be in two weeks time, and I’ll be doing a little feature about our house and what we’ve done with it so far. Hopefully it’ll be interesting to some of you!
